Hip-hop has had a significant influence on culture, music, and society since its inception in the late 1970s. Over time it has evolved and diversified, branching out into various sub-genres and subcultures. As a result of its impact, it has also had a significant influence on the visual arts with graffiti and street art being some of its most notable contributions. In the context of hip-hop music, vinyl records played a significant role in the development of the genre. Hip-hop DJs would use vinyl records on turntables to create the instrumental tracks for emcees to rap over. “For The Record” aims to examine the different elements of Hip-hop from five visual artists from around the world. Their artwork celebrates these Hip-hop icons and asks viewers to reflect on the relationship between art, music, and history.
